Chester County Courthouse
West Chester, Pennsylvania

The symbolic heart of Chester County is its 1847 Greek Revival courthouse,
designed by renowned architect Thomas U. Walter. Despite plans by the courts
to move judicial functions out of the building into a new Justice Center, in
2002, the Commissioners of Chester County committed to invest $1.9 million
in a detailed and rigorous exterior restoration of the landmark courthouse.
The walls of Pictou stone from Nova Scotia were carefully repointed and cleaned,
and the drainage, gutters and expansion control of the standing-seam metal
roof improved. Much of the original exterior woodwork was restored. Two of
the more challenging aspects of the project were the restoration of the monumental
cast-iron portico columns and recreating their early sandpaint finishes.
