Fort Mifflin - The Commandant's House
This structure has been restored piece by piece, using salvaged bricks, door, hardware, transoms, louvers, running trim and casings and four Greek Revival mantelpieces of Valley Forge gray marble. Everything must be carried in by hand, just as it was during its original construction 209 years ago.
The history of the structure has be researched so the restoration could be faithful to the past. The foundation, which had been sinking, has been stabilized. The walls have been restored and the roof and cupola were rebuilt.
Interior rehabilitation includes HVAC, the restoration of the two south chambers, and the creation of one large room to serve as a grand space.
